What Is It?

The Excimer laser delivers a concentrated 308nm UVB wavelength — the therapeutic range for stimulating melanocyte activity and immune modulation — precisely to affected patches without exposing surrounding healthy skin.

In vitiligo, the 308nm beam triggers melanocyte proliferation and migration from follicular reservoirs at the patch margin, promoting repigmentation in areas where melanocytes remain viable.

Compared to conventional phototherapy (whole-body NB-UVB), Excimer laser is site-specific, allowing higher fluence delivery to active patches with a fraction of the total skin exposure — reducing side effects while improving localised response.

Benefits

  • Targeted repigmentation in vitiligo patches
  • Higher fluence than broad-panel phototherapy with less total UV exposure
  • Effective for localised and stable patches
  • No systemic medication required
  • Can treat cosmetically sensitive areas (face, hands, neck)

The Process

A simple three-stage journey from consultation to recovery.

1

Before

Dermatological assessment, vitiligo stability evaluation, and patch mapping.

2

During

Calibrated 308nm beam delivery to each patch at prescribed fluence, building dose across sessions.

3

After

SPF guidance and session interval planning based on repigmentation response.

Who Is It For?

Suitable for stable vitiligo patches, localised psoriasis, and selected UV-responsive skin conditions assessed by dermatologist.

Ideal For

  • Stable vitiligo with defined patches
  • Vitiligo on face, neck, or hands
  • Localised plaque psoriasis
  • Patients who cannot tolerate systemic phototherapy

May Not Be Ideal If

  • Rapidly spreading (active) vitiligo without stabilisation
  • Photosensitive conditions or medications
  • Universal vitiligo (>80% depigmentation) where repigmentation potential is limited

Pre-Care & Post-Care

Good preparation and aftercare are key to safe, consistent outcomes.

Before Treatment

  • - Avoid self-tanning products or UV exposure before sessions
  • - Inform doctor of all current medications (photosensitising drugs require review)
  • - Keep treatment areas accessible and clean on session days

After Treatment

  • - Apply broad-spectrum SPF to treated areas if exposed to sun
  • - Do not use tanning beds or unprotected sun exposure between sessions
  • - Attend sessions consistently for best cumulative response

Safety Notes

Every medical procedure has expected reactions and rare risks.

Temporary redness or mild erythema after sessions (expected and dose-dependent)
Rare blistering if fluence is too high — managed by dose titration
Hyperpigmentation of treated skin border if exposure is uneven

Combination Plans

Some concerns improve faster when treatments are sequenced intentionally.

Often combined with topical agents (tacrolimus, corticosteroids) to enhance repigmentation response
Can be integrated with oral or topical antioxidant support protocols
